Marrakech to Merzouga transfer
A private Marrakech to Merzouga transfer covers 560 km in 8h30–9h30 door-to-door and starts from €312 for the whole car, not per person. The road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then follows the Dades and Todra gorges — the scenery is the reason most people do this by private car rather than coach. Fuel, tolls, luggage and a professional English-speaking driver are included in the fixed price.
Merzouga sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, 560 km southeast of Marrakech. There is no railway and no scheduled flight; the only ways are the overnight coach, a group tour minibus, or your own car with a driver.
The drive climbs the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, drops through Ouarzazate, then runs the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs past the Dades and Todra gorges. About nine hours with the stops that make it worth doing in daylight.
Booked as a private transfer you control the pace: Aït Benhaddou for an hour, lunch at Boumalne Dades, twenty minutes standing in the Todra gorge. A group tour does the same road on someone else's clock; the coach does it in the dark.

Marrakech to Merzouga: transfer, bus or taxi?
The dunes are a long way from the medina. What separates the options is whether you see the road between them.
| Option | Typical price | Door-to-door time | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Bacharide) | €312 per car | 8h30–9h30 | Door-to-door, fixed price agreed at booking, English-speaking chauffeur, flight tracking and one comfort stop included. |
| Supratours / CTM overnight coach | ~200–250 MAD per person | 11h–12h | Cheapest, and it runs overnight — which means you cross the Atlas and the gorges without seeing any of them. |
| Group 3-day desert tour | ~800–1,500 MAD per person | 3 days return | Includes the camp and meals, but the itinerary and the minibus companions are fixed, and stops are timed for the group. |
| Self-drive hire car | From ~350 MAD/day + fuel | 9h | Possible, but nine hours of mountain switchbacks and gorge roads is a demanding drive after a flight. |

What you pass on the way
Tizi n'Tichka is the high point at 2,260 m, freshly resurfaced and dramatic rather than frightening. Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen kasbah, is a short detour before Ouarzazate and the single best stop on the route.
After Ouarzazate the road follows the Dades valley — palm groves, kasbahs, the Dades gorge switchbacks — then the Todra gorge, where 300-metre walls close to a few metres apart. Merzouga arrives in the last hour, flat and pale, with the dunes rising suddenly on the left.
Arriving at a desert camp
Most camps sit inside the erg and are reached by 4x4 or camel from a meeting point on the sealed road at Merzouga or Hassi Labied. Give us the camp name at booking and the driver takes you to the exact handover point, not just the village.
Aim to arrive by 16:00 if you want the camel ride into camp at sunset — that means leaving Marrakech by 07:00 with the usual stops.
Doing it over two days instead
A common alternative is an overnight in Ouarzazate or Dades and a shorter second day, which turns nine hours of driving into two relaxed halves and adds Skoura or the Rose Valley.
We price multi-day itineraries as a driver-at-disposal rather than a one-way transfer, so the same driver and vehicle stay with you throughout.
