Marrakech to Fes transfer

A private Marrakech to Fes transfer covers 530 km in 7h00–8h00 door-to-door and starts from €246 for the whole car, not per person. The train is the cheapest sensible alternative at roughly seven hours and 200–300 MAD per person, but it is station to station and cannot stop at Ifrane, Beni Mellal or the Middle Atlas cedar forest. Fuel, tolls, luggage and a professional English-speaking driver are included in the fixed price.

Marrakech and Fes are Morocco's two imperial heavyweights and 530 km apart. Nobody enjoys this leg by accident — it is a full travel day whichever way you do it, so the question is what you get out of the day.

By private car the drive is roughly seven hours of motorway via Beni Mellal and Khenifra, or eight with the Middle Atlas variant through Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest, where the barbary macaques are. Both are door to door, riad gate to riad gate, at one fixed price for the vehicle.

The ONCF train is genuinely good: about seven hours with a change at Casablanca and roughly 200–300 MAD per person in first class. It just cannot deviate, and it leaves you at Fes station with a taxi ride still to come.

Marrakech to Fes: transfer, bus or taxi?

Four ways to cross the country. For one traveller the train is hard to beat on price; for two or more, or for anyone wanting Ifrane and the cedar forest on the way, the private car changes the shape of the day.

Two routes: fast motorway or the Middle Atlas

The fast option runs Marrakech → Beni Mellal → Khenifra → Fes on the A7 and N8, about seven hours with one comfort stop. It is the choice when you simply need to be in Fes for dinner.

The scenic option adds Ifrane — the alpine-looking hill town — and the Azrou cedar forest with its barbary macaques, arriving in Fes an hour or so later. Same fixed price; you decide at booking.

Breaking the journey

Many travellers split this leg with a night in Beni Mellal or, more often, turn it into the first day of a wider loop through the Middle Atlas. If you would rather stop overnight, book two shorter legs and we hold the same driver where possible.

The classic alternative is to go Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes over three days, seeing the desert instead of the motorway. We price that as a multi-day disposal rather than a one-way transfer.

Arriving in the Fes medina

Fes el-Bali is closed to cars. Drivers drop at the nearest gate — Bab Boujloud, Bab Rcif or Bab Ftouh depending on your riad — and help with the bags to the last drivable point; most riads will send a porter if you tell them your arrival time.

If you are connecting to a flight from Fès-Saïss (FEZ), allow the full driving time plus two hours of check-in.
