Transfer or day trip — which do you need?
If you are staying in Essaouira, book a one-way transfer and a separate return for your departure date. If you are visiting for the day, book the driver for the day: he waits in Essaouira while you explore and drives you back in the evening, which lets you leave at 09:00 rather than the 07:00 start most group tours demand.
A day with a waiting driver is priced by the day rather than per kilometre. For two couples travelling together it typically works out below the per-seat cost of an organised coach tour, and you set the schedule.
The route and where to stop
Drivers take the N8 through Chichaoua — toll-free, wide and well maintained. Traffic is light outside the Marrakech ring road, and the only genuine slow section is the final 30 km, where argan groves and the goats-in-trees photo stops tempt everyone to pull over.
Sidi Mokhtar, roughly 100 km in, is the usual lunch stop and has clean roadside tagine restaurants used by tour operators. Allow 45 minutes if you want to eat; one short stop is included at no extra cost.
Arriving in Essaouira
The medina is car-free inside the ramparts. We drive to the nearest accessible gate to your riad — normally Bab Marrakech, Bab Doukkala or the port car park — and walk you to the door with your luggage. Tell us your riad name at booking and the driver will have the approach planned.
For your flight home, leave Essaouira at least four hours before departure from Marrakech Menara: three hours of driving plus two hours of check-in, with a buffer for the ring road.
