The distance is modest; the road is not. The N9 climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m through continuous switchbacks before descending to the Ounila valley. It is one of the great drives in North Africa and one of the least suitable for a jet-lagged visitor in an unfamiliar hire car.

Crossing the Tizi n'Tichka
The pass has been substantially rebuilt in recent years and the surface is good, but it remains 60 km of continuous bends with lorry traffic and unguarded drops in places. Snow can close it briefly in winter; our dispatch monitors conditions and reroutes or reschedules when it does.
There are several viewpoints and argan or mineral stalls on the climb. One stop is included; ask your driver which vendors are worth it.
Combining with Ouarzazate and the desert
Aït Benhaddou is 30 km before Ouarzazate, so most guests see both in a day. If you are continuing to Merzouga or the Dades gorges, book this as the first leg of a multi-day private tour rather than a return day trip — it is the same drive either way, and you avoid crossing the Atlas twice.
