Leaving Fes: when to set off
A 07:00–09:00 departure puts you in Marrakech mid to late afternoon, in daylight, with time to settle before dinner. Later starts arrive after dark, which is manageable but harder if your riad is deep inside the medina.
If you are flying out of Marrakech Menara (RAK) the same day, allow the full seven hours plus two hours of check-in and a weekend traffic buffer — and consider the Middle Atlas route another time.
What the drive is actually like
Most of it is good dual carriageway and open national road across the plains, with one service-area stop included. The Middle Atlas variant swaps an hour of motorway for cedar forest, Ifrane's alpine architecture and, usually, macaques by the roadside.
Vans and minibuses take the same route at the same fixed price, so a group of six or twelve pays one fare rather than a per-seat multiple.
