Marrakech airport to city centre
Marrakech Menara airport (RAK) is only 6 km from the city centre — about 15–20 minutes by road. Airport bus 19 costs 30 MAD and runs every 30 minutes to Jemaa el-Fnaa; the official grand-taxi fare posted at the rank is 100 MAD by day and 150 MAD at night; a pre-booked private transfer starts at €21 for the whole car, with the driver waiting inside arrivals. The bus is cheapest, the taxi is quickest to grab, and the transfer is the only option that reaches a riad door with your luggage.
Menara is one of the closest big airports to its own city centre anywhere in North Africa. The runway sits barely 6 km southwest of Jemaa el-Fnaa, and on a clear evening you can see the Koutoubia minaret from the approach. That proximity is good news: no option here takes more than about 40 minutes, and none of them costs a fortune. The choice comes down to how much luggage you have, what time you land, and whether your accommodation is on a street a car can actually reach.

One thing worth knowing up front: no vehicle can drive to most riad doors. The medina's derbs are pedestrian-width. Every option, including the most expensive one, ends with a short walk — the difference is whether somebody walks it with you and your suitcase, or whether you are left at the nearest square with a map.

Arriving at Menara: what actually happens
Menara has three terminals sharing one arrivals area. Passport control is the slow part — 20 to 45 minutes is normal on a busy evening when several European charters land together, and there is no fast track for tourists. Baggage reclaim is quick once you are through. Free Wi-Fi covers the terminal, and there are ATMs (BMCE, Attijariwafa, CIH) and Maroc Telecom / Orange / Inwi SIM desks in the landside hall.
Walk out of baggage reclaim and you are in the public arrivals hall. Pre-booked drivers wait here, on the left as you exit, holding name signs. Keep walking through the doors and you reach the taxi rank on the forecourt; the bus 19 stop is a further 100 m to the right, signposted 'Navette Aéroport'.
Change money inside the terminal only if you need a small amount — the airport rate is poor. The ATMs give a better rate than the exchange desks, and you will want a few small notes for the bus, tips or a petit taxi.
Airport bus 19 in detail
The Alsa-operated bus 19 shuttle is the budget answer, and it is a perfectly good one if you are travelling light. It runs roughly every 30 minutes from about 06:15 to 23:30, costs 30 MAD one way (a return valid two weeks is around 50 MAD), and takes 30–40 minutes to Jemaa el-Fnaa depending on traffic, stopping in Gueliz on the way.
The catches: it stops at the edge of the medina, not inside it, so a riad deep in the Mellah or Kasbah means a 10–20 minute walk with your bags through crowded lanes. Luggage space is limited and gets fought over when a full flight arrives. And after 23:30 it simply does not run — a lot of European flights land later than that.
Where you are staying changes the answer
Medina and Kasbah: 15–20 minutes by road, then a walk. Cars reach Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou, Bab Ksiba or the Mellah gate depending on your derb. A pre-booked driver knows which gate is closest and carries your bag in; a taxi driver drops you at whichever square is convenient for him.
Gueliz and Hivernage: the easiest arrivals in Marrakech. 10–15 minutes, modern streets, hotels with actual driveways. Any option works here, and bus 19 stops in Gueliz on its way into town.
Palmeraie: 25–30 minutes northeast, no bus service and a long, dark road at night. Taxi drivers charge a premium and often do not know the individual villa gates. This is the one area where pre-booking is close to essential.
Agdal and the southern hotel strip: about 20 minutes, straightforward by any method, though the ring road backs up between 17:00 and 19:00.
Which should you pick?
Solo, hand luggage, daytime arrival, staying in Gueliz: take bus 19. It is 30 MAD and the walk at the other end is nothing.
Two people with cases heading into the medina: the maths gets close. Two bus fares plus the hassle of dragging cases through Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk versus a fixed-price car to your gate — most people book the car once, then use the bus on the way back when they know the city.
Family, late flight, Palmeraie or a riad you have never found before: pre-book. This is exactly the arrival that goes wrong at midnight with a tired child and a driver who wants 300 MAD.
