The official taxi fare from Marrakech Menara airport to the city centre is 100 MAD (about $10) by day and 150 MAD at night, posted on a board at the rank. Petit taxis metered from the airport typically run 70–100 MAD for up to three passengers. Drivers routinely open at 200–300 MAD with arriving tourists, so agree the price before your luggage goes in. A pre-booked private transfer is €21 for the whole car with no negotiation, flight tracking and a driver waiting inside arrivals.
Almost every complaint travellers have about arriving in Marrakech starts at the taxi rank. Not because the taxis are bad — most drivers are fine — but because the fare is negotiated rather than metered, you have just landed, you do not have a feel for the currency yet, and the queue behind you is not a patient one. Knowing the real number before you walk out of arrivals removes almost all of that.

Petit taxi vs grand taxi — and why it changes the price
Petit taxis are the small beige city cars. They are metered, legally limited to three passengers, and cannot leave the city boundary. From Menara into town a metered petit taxi usually lands between 70 and 100 MAD, with a legitimate 50% uplift at night. The word you want is 'compteur' — say it before you get in.
Grand taxis are the older Mercedes saloons and modern estates that work the airport rank and intercity routes. They are not metered. Instead there is an official posted fare for the airport-to-city run — 100 MAD by day, 150 MAD at night — displayed on a board at the rank. Grand taxis can take up to six passengers, which is why families and groups end up in them.
Whichever you take, settle the number out loud before your bag goes in the boot. Once the luggage is loaded your bargaining position is gone, and both sides know it.
The four things that inflate a Menara taxi fare
The high opener. 250 or 300 MAD is a routine first quote to an obviously-just-landed passenger. It is not an insult and it is not a scam exactly — it is the opening move. Naming 100 MAD (or 150 at night) calmly and pleasantly usually ends it in one exchange.
The invented luggage charge. There is no official per-bag supplement from Menara. If one appears mid-journey, it was made up.
The 'your riad is closed / has moved' detour. An old trick: the driver claims your accommodation is unreachable or shut and offers a friend's place instead, usually with a commission attached. Your riad is fine. Ask to be taken to the gate you agreed.
The change problem. Drivers frequently have 'no change' for a 200 MAD note. Carry 20s and 50s, which the airport ATMs will not give you — break a note inside the terminal before you walk out.
When the taxi is genuinely the better choice
We are not going to pretend otherwise: if you are travelling light, landing in daylight, staying somewhere easy like Gueliz, and you are comfortable holding a price in a friendly negotiation, the taxi is cheaper and perfectly fine. 100 MAD is about $10. Take it.
The transfer earns its extra $12 in the other cases — a 01:30 landing, three suitcases and a pushchair, a riad down a derb you have never seen, a group of six splitting one van, or simply a first trip to Morocco where you would rather the arrival were boring. Flight tracking means a two-hour delay costs you nothing, and the driver is inside the terminal rather than somewhere on a forecourt.
