Fes to Essaouira, the comfortable way.
.jpg?width=1600)
Fes to Essaouira is 595 km by road — roughly 7h45 in a private car by way of Rabat, Nouaceur (skirting Casablanca) and El Jadida. People come for the relaxed medina, the harbour grill stalls, the long windy beach and a few slow days after the intensity of Marrakech, and the drive in is part of the story.
Who makes the Fes to Essaouira trip
Why this trip? Fes is usually a two- or three-night stop, left for the Sahara, Chefchaouen or the long run back to Marrakech. As for Essaouira, people come for the relaxed medina, the harbour grill stalls, the long windy beach and a few slow days after the intensity of Marrakech. Few people make this 595 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Fes to Essaouira
West of Fes the A2 passes Meknes — with Volubilis a short detour — then Khemisset and the Maâmora cork forest into Rabat. From Rabat the coastal motorway heads south and bypasses Casablanca on the east to reach Mohammed V without entering the city. From Mohammed V the route skirts Casablanca to the south, joining the coastal motorway at Had Soualem and running past Azemmour to El Jadida. South of El Jadida the R301 coast road runs through market gardens and salt pans to the Oualidia lagoon and on to Safi. South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. Good places to break the drive: the Roman ruins of Volubilis (detour), an oyster lunch at Oualidia and the Oualidia lagoon.
Arriving in Essaouira
Essaouira is a whitewashed, walled fishing port on the Atlantic — Portuguese-era ramparts, a working harbour full of blue boats and a steady trade wind that made it Morocco's windsurf capital. The medina is car-free. Drop-offs happen at Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech or the harbour car park, where licensed porters with barrows take bags the last few hundred metres.
Should you split the journey?
At 7h45 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is El Jadida: El Jadida's Portuguese quarter is worth an evening. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
Before you go
A final practical note on Essaouira: mild all year — rarely above 27 °C even in August — but the wind is strongest from May to September. And when you are ready to move on, Sidi Kaouki's surf beach is 25 minutes south and the argan villages inland make an easy half day. The return leg, Essaouira to Fes, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.

| Private transfer (Bacharide) | from €416 per vehicle | 7 h 45 | Yes | Fixed fare for the whole car, hotel-door pickup, luggage and child seats included, flight tracked. |
| CTM / Supratours coach | ~€40 per person | 10 h 60 | No | Cheapest option, but fixed departure times, station-to-station, and luggage is charged by the bag. |
| Shared grand taxi | ~€55 per seat | 8 h 60 | No | Leaves only when six seats are sold. No seatbelts in the rear, no boot space for large cases. |
| Self-drive hire car | ~€100 per day + fuel | 8 h 15 | Yes | Flexible, but you handle the mountain passes, city parking and the deposit hold. |
Coach, grand taxi and rail figures are typical published fares and timings for Moroccan operators (CTM, Supratours, ONCF) and vary by season. Only the Bacharide fare is fixed and quoted at booking.
