Essaouira to Fes, the comfortable way.
.jpg?width=1600)
Essaouira to Fes is 595 km by road — roughly 7h45 in a private car by way of Safi, El Jadida and Nouaceur (skirting Casablanca). People come to get lost in the medina, see the Chouara tannery and the Bou Inania madrasa, and eat some of the country's best food, and the drive in is part of the story.
Who makes the Essaouira to Fes trip
Why this trip? Most departures from Essaouira are the second half of a coast-and-city trip, or surfers and kiters moving on once the wind drops. As for Fes, people come to get lost in the medina, see the Chouara tannery and the Bou Inania madrasa, and eat some of the country's best food. Few people make this 595 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Essaouira to Fes
North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Between Safi and El Jadida the R301 follows the coast past salt pans, market gardens and the Oualidia lagoon, famous for its oysters. From El Jadida the A1 runs north past Azemmour, then a bypass through Had Soualem avoids Casablanca and leads straight to the airport at Nouaceur. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. East of Rabat the A2 crosses the cork oak forest of Maâmora and the plateau at Khemisset to Meknes, with the Roman ruins of Volubilis a short detour north, then continues to Fes. Good places to break the drive: an oyster lunch at Oualidia, the Oualidia lagoon and Meknes' Bab Mansour gate.
Arriving in Fes
Fes is Morocco's oldest imperial city — Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free medina in the world, a maze of tanneries, madrasas and craft workshops. Vehicles stop at the medina gates — Bab Boujloud, Bab Guissa or R'cif — and riads send someone to walk you in. Without a guide the lanes are genuinely confusing, so wait for them.
Should you split the journey?
At 7h45 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is El Jadida: El Jadida's Portuguese quarter is worth an evening. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
Before you go
Hot in summer (often 38 °C+) and cold, sometimes frosty, in winter; spring and autumn are best. From Fes, Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis make a half-day trip, and the cedar forests of Ifrane are an hour south. The return leg, Fes to Essaouira, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
Private car, coach, grand taxi or train?
The fastest way from Essaouira to Fes is a private transfer: about 7 h 45 door to door for a fixed €416 for the whole vehicle. The coach is cheaper per person but adds a transfer at each end and roughly an hour of waiting; a shared grand taxi only leaves once six seats are sold.
| Option | Typical price | Journey time | Door to door | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Bacharide) | from €416 per vehicle | 7 h 45 | Yes | Fixed fare for the whole car, hotel-door pickup, luggage and child seats included, flight tracked. |
| CTM / Supratours coach | ~€40 per person | 10 h 60 | No | Cheapest option, but fixed departure times, station-to-station, and luggage is charged by the bag. |
| Shared grand taxi | ~€55 per seat | 8 h 60 | No | Leaves only when six seats are sold. No seatbelts in the rear, no boot space for large cases. |
| Self-drive hire car | ~€100 per day + fuel | 8 h 15 | Yes | Flexible, but you handle the mountain passes, city parking and the deposit hold. |
Coach, grand taxi and rail figures are typical published fares and timings for Moroccan operators (CTM, Supratours, ONCF) and vary by season. Only the Bacharide fare is fixed and quoted at booking.
