Grand taxis in Morocco

A grand taxi is a shared intercity car — usually an old Mercedes 240 or, increasingly, a Dacia Logan — that leaves a fixed rank once six passengers have paid. Fares are set per seat and are cheap (roughly 70–90 MAD Marrakech–Essaouira), but you leave only when the car fills, share it with strangers, and are dropped at a rank on the edge of town. Buying all six seats turns it into a private car at roughly four to six times the single-seat fare.

Grand taxis are the backbone of Moroccan intercity travel and, for locals, the default. There is no timetable: cars wait at a designated rank, the driver calls out the destination, and the taxi departs the moment the sixth seat is sold.

They are cheap and often faster than the bus. They are also cramped — six passengers in a car built for five is normal — with no seatbelts in the middle row, no air conditioning in older vehicles, and no luggage space beyond the boot and roof rack.

This page explains the fares, the etiquette, and how to buy out the whole car, so you can decide whether a grand taxi or a fixed-price private transfer suits your trip.

Where to find a grand taxi

Every city has one or more grand taxi ranks, usually near the main bus station or on the road out of town toward the destination. In Marrakech, Essaouira-bound taxis leave from near Bab Doukkala; in Agadir, from the Inezgane hub a few kilometres inland.

Ask your hotel which rank serves your destination — going to the wrong one can cost an hour.

Safety and practical tips

Older grand taxis have no rear seatbelts and drivers are paid by the trip, which encourages speed. If you are travelling with young children, insist on a vehicle with belts or book a car with child seats instead.

Keep small notes: drivers rarely have change for a 200 MAD bill. Luggage is stacked on the roof or in the boot — keep valuables with you.
