Marrakech to Atlas Mountains transfer

A private Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains transfer covers 75 km in 1h15–1h45 each way door-to-door and starts from €26 for the whole car, not per person. Imlil is the trailhead for Toubkal, Ourika is the easiest valley for a half day, and Oukaimeden is the ski station — all within 90 minutes of the city. Fuel, tolls, luggage and a professional English-speaking driver are included in the fixed price.

The High Atlas begins barely an hour from Jemaa el-Fnaa, which is why so many Marrakech itineraries include a mountain day. Three destinations account for most trips: the Ourika valley for waterfalls and riverside lunches, Imlil for trekking and the Toubkal trailhead, and Oukaimeden for snow between January and March.

All three are straightforward by private car and awkward by public transport. Shared taxis run to Ourika and Asni but leave when full, stop where the driver chooses, and are hard to arrange for the return in the late afternoon.

We price these as a day hire: the driver takes you up, waits while you walk, eat or ride, and brings you back. There is no hourly meter running while you are on the trail.

Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains: transfer, bus or taxi?

Three ways into the mountains. The deciding factor is usually the return leg — a private car is waiting for you at 17:00; a shared taxi may not be.

Choosing a valley

Ourika (60 km, about 1h15) is the gentlest option: a river valley with terrace restaurants, the Setti Fatma waterfalls, and a short scramble to the first cascade. Best for a half day or a relaxed full day with lunch.

Imlil (65 km, about 1h30) is the trekking base at 1,740 m, the trailhead for Jebel Toubkal and for shorter walks to Armed and the Kasbah du Toubkal. Mules and guides are arranged locally.

Oukaimeden (75 km, about 1h30) is the ski station at 2,600 m, worth the drive from January to March for snow, and in summer for the high pasture and rock carvings.

Practicalities

It is meaningfully colder up there — often 10–15°C below Marrakech, and windy at Oukaimeden. Bring a layer even in summer.

The last section into Imlil and Oukaimeden is narrow with rough patches, and can require caution after rain or snow. Our drivers run these roads year-round; dispatch reroutes if conditions close them.

Vehicles and prices on this route
