Plan on about 10h05 for the 830 km between Chefchaouen and Agadir, following the N2 via Tetouan, the A1 motorway, the A5 / A3 bypass and finally the A7 motorway. Chefchaouen is the blue-washed mountain town of the Rif, its medina of indigo lanes climbing the slope below two peaks, with a kasbah and a spring-fed river at the top.
Who makes the Chefchaouen to Agadir trip
Why this trip? Chefchaouen is usually a one- or two-night stop between Tangier and Fes, so departures often continue straight on. As for Agadir, it is Morocco's sunniest resort, with year-round beach weather, family hotels along the bay and golf courses inland. Few people make this 830 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Chefchaouen to Agadir
From Chefchaouen the road winds north out of the Rif to Tetouan's white medina and across to Tangier. South of Tangier the A1 passes Asilah and Larache, then runs through Kenitra's farmland to Rabat. From Rabat the coastal motorway heads south and bypasses Casablanca on the east to reach Mohammed V without entering the city. South of Mohammed V the A7 crosses the Chaouia wheat plains past Berrechid, Settat and Benguerir, then drops over the Jbilet hills into Marrakech. South of Marrakech the A7 crosses the Chichaoua plain, then climbs through the western High Atlas near Imi n'Tanout and Argana on a spectacular stretch of tunnels and viaducts before descending to the Souss. Good places to break the drive: Larache's Lixus ruins, the Settat service area and the Sidi Bou Othmane service area.
Arriving in Agadir
Agadir is a modern beach city rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake — a 6 km sandy bay with a promenade, a marina at the north end and the Kasbah hill above it. Hotels line the promenade and the Founty district; most have a drive-up entrance, so this is one of the easiest drop-offs in the country.
Should you split the journey?
At 10h05 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Rabat: Rabat is a calm capital for a night, with the Kasbah of the Udayas at sunset. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
