Plan on about 2h15 for the 175 km between Marrakech and Safi, following the R207 / N8 and finally the N1 / coast road. The road from Marrakech to Safi
West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Good places to break the drive: the argan cooperatives at Ounagha, a café stop at Chichaoua and Souiria Kdima beach.
Arriving in Safi
Safi is an industrial port and the historic capital of Moroccan pottery, with a Portuguese sea fortress, a hilltop potters' quarter and big-wave reef breaks known to serious surfers. Hotels are spread between the port, the modern centre and the cliff road; addresses are straightforward by car.
Before you go
