Plan on about 5h05 for the 415 km between El Jadida and Agadir, following the R301 coastal road, the N1 / coast road, the N1 through argan country, the N1 cliff road and finally the N1 coast road. El Jadida is a seaside town 100 km south of Casablanca, built around a UNESCO-listed Portuguese fortress (Mazagan) with its famous underground cistern, plus a big beach resort just north of town.

Who makes the El Jadida to Agadir trip

Why this trip? Departures from El Jadida are commonly airport runs to Casablanca or the next stop on a coastal road trip. As for Agadir, it is Morocco's sunniest resort, with year-round beach weather, family hotels along the bay and golf courses inland.

The road from El Jadida to Agadir

South of El Jadida the R301 coast road runs through market gardens and salt pans to the Oualidia lagoon and on to Safi. South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. South of Essaouira the N1 heads inland through Smimou and Tamanar's argan hills — the stretch where goats famously climb the trees — before cutting back towards the coast at Imsouane. Southbound from Imsouane the coast road passes Tamri's banana plantations and the Cap Ghir lighthouse before dropping into the surf villages. Heading south, the N1 leaves the surf coast at Aourir's banana stalls and follows the shore through Anza into Agadir's port district. Good places to break the drive: Souiria Kdima beach, an argan oil cooperative near Tamanar and goats in the argan trees around Smimou.

Arriving in Agadir

Agadir is a modern beach city rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake — a 6 km sandy bay with a promenade, a marina at the north end and the Kasbah hill above it. Hotels line the promenade and the Founty district; most have a drive-up entrance, so this is one of the easiest drop-offs in the country.

Before you go

Around 300 days of sun; winter days still reach the low 20s °C, which is why it fills with European visitors from November to March. From Agadir, Taghazout's surf villages are 30 minutes north and Paradise Valley's palm gorge under an hour inland. The return leg, Agadir to El Jadida, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
