14 Days in Morocco: The Full North-to-South Loop

Two weeks lets you travel Morocco in one direction, north to south, instead of orbiting Marrakech. Fly into Tangier or Fes, fly out of Marrakech or Agadir, and never drive the same road twice.

The route

• Days 1–2 — Tangier and the Strait
• Days 3–4 — Chefchaouen and the Rif
• Days 5–7 — Fes, Meknes and Volubilis
• Days 8–9 — Midelt, Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes
• Day 10 — Todra gorge, Dades, Ouarzazate
• Days 11–12 — Marrakech
• Days 13–14 — Essaouira or Agadir, then home

Days 1–2 — Tangier

A port city with one foot in Europe: the kasbah, the Grand Socco, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Arrival prices are on the Tangier airport transfer page.

Days 3–4 — Chefchaouen

Two hours south into the Rif. The blue town is small enough to walk in an afternoon, so use the second day for the Akchour waterfalls or the Spanish mosque viewpoint at sunset. Details in our Chefchaouen guide.

Days 5–7 — Fes, Meknes, Volubilis

Give Fes two days and the medina still wins. On the third, drive out to Volubilis — Roman mosaics in open fields — and stop in Meknes on the way back. See our 3 days in Fes guide.

Days 8–9 — The Sahara

South through Ifrane and Midelt to Merzouga: about 7 hours with stops, then a camel ride out to a camp in the Erg Chebbi. Sunrise on the dunes is the one wake-up call nobody complains about.

Day 10 — Gorges and kasbahs

Todra gorge, the Dades road, the palm groves of Skoura, then Ait Benhaddou and a night in Ouarzazate.

Days 11–12 — Marrakech

Over the Tizi n'Tichka and into the city. Two days is enough for the medina, Majorelle and one Atlas afternoon — see the 2-day plan and the Marrakech page.

Days 13–14 — The Atlantic

Finish at Essaouira for ramparts and seafood, or drop south to Agadir and the surf villages of Taghazout and Tamraght, covered in the surf coast itinerary.

Practical notes
