2 Days in Marrakech: A Short-Break Itinerary That Actually Works
A realistic 48-hour Marrakech plan — medina, Majorelle, a Palmeraie sunset and one Atlas escape — with honest walking times, taxi advice and airport transfer prices.
Two days in Marrakech is a real trip, not a consolation prize — as long as you don't try to add the desert. Here is the plan we give guests who land on a Friday evening and fly out on Sunday night.
Before you arrive
Stay inside the medina if you want atmosphere, in Gueliz if you want pavements, taxis and restaurants that take cards. Medina riads are usually reached on foot down lanes no car can enter, so agree the drop point with your riad before you land. Our drivers do this daily and walk you the last hundred metres with your luggage.
Arrival itself is simple: fixed-price Marrakech airport transfers run door to door from Menara, and the RAK airport page lists every destination and vehicle with the same price the booking search quotes.
Day 1 — The medina, slowly
- Morning — Bahia Palace first, before the coach groups. Then the Saadian Tombs, ten minutes away on foot.
- Midday — lunch on a rooftop off Rue Riad Zitoun. The heat between 13:00 and 16:00 in summer is not negotiable; plan indoors.
- Afternoon — the souks north of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Give yourself two hours and accept that you will get lost. It is part of it.
- Evening — Jemaa el-Fnaa from a café terrace at sunset, then down into the food stalls.
Day 2 — Gardens, Gueliz and a choice
- Morning — Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent museum. Book the timed ticket the night before; the queue is the single biggest time sink of the weekend.
- Lunch — Gueliz, where the city eats normally.
- Afternoon, option A — the Palmeraie for a quiet sunset, 20 minutes by car.
- Afternoon, option B — the Atlas foothills and the Ourika valley, about an hour each way. Worth it if you have a late flight.
Getting around
Inside the medina you walk — no car will help you. Between the medina, Gueliz and the Palmeraie, petits taxis are cheap but metered only if you insist, and they will not wait for you. If you can steal a third day
Spend it on the coast: Essaouira is 2.5 hours west and completely changes the trip — wind, seafood and blue fishing boats instead of red walls. Longer trips are covered in our 7-day Morocco itinerary.
Best time to go
March to May and September to November are ideal. July and August pass 40°C regularly — the medina empties in the afternoon for a reason. December and January are pleasant by day, genuinely cold after dark.
