5 Days in Morocco: Marrakech, the Atlas and Essaouira

A 5-day Morocco itinerary that doesn't rush the desert. Two days in Marrakech, a day in the Atlas, two on the Atlantic — with driving times and fixed transfer prices.

Five days is the length most first trips to Morocco actually are. The mistake is trying to bolt the Sahara onto it. This route keeps driving under three hours at a time and still gives you a city, a mountain and an ocean.

The shape of the trip

  • Days 1–2 — Marrakech
  • Day 3 — Atlas mountains, Imlil or the Ourika valley
  • Days 4–5 — Essaouira, flying home from Marrakech or Essaouira

Days 1–2 — Marrakech

Land at Menara, drop bags, and start with the medina. The detailed two-day plan is in our 2 days in Marrakech guide: Bahia Palace and the souks on the first day, Majorelle and Gueliz on the second, Jemaa el-Fnaa both evenings. Airport arrival is covered on the Marrakech airport transfer page.

Day 3 — Into the Atlas

Imlil sits at 1,740 m, about 90 minutes from Marrakech, and is the starting point for the walk up towards Toubkal. If you want scenery without a hike, the Ourika valley is closer and gentler — waterfalls, Berber villages and riverside lunch tables. Both work as a day trip; see the Atlas day trip guide.

Roads are narrow and the last stretch to Imlil climbs hard. A driver who knows the valley is worth more here than anywhere else on the trip.

Days 4–5 — Essaouira

Leave Marrakech mid-morning and you are on the ramparts by lunch. The drive is 190 km through argan country, with the goat-in-a-tree stops everyone photographs. Essaouira is windy almost every afternoon, which is why it is a windsurf and kitesurf town and why it is 10°C cooler than Marrakech in July.

Spend day 4 in the medina and the port, day 5 on the beach or in Sidi Kaouki, then drive back for your flight. Fixed prices for the run are on the Essaouira page and in the Marrakech airport to Essaouira guide.

Driving times at a glance

  • RAK airport → Marrakech medina — 6 km · ~20 min
  • Marrakech → Imlil — 65 km · ~1 h 30
  • Marrakech → Ourika — 45 km · ~1 h
  • Marrakech → Essaouira — 190 km · ~2 h 45
  • Essaouira → RAK airport — 190 km · ~2 h 45

What to skip

Merzouga and the Sahara, Chefchaouen, and Fes. Each of them turns this into a driving holiday. They belong in the 10-day version of the trip.

Best season

Spring and autumn suit every stop on this route. In summer, flip the balance: one day in Marrakech, three on the coast.
