Chefchaouen has no railway and no airport, so however you arrive in Morocco the last leg is by road. From Tangier that leg is 115 km on the N2 through Tetouan, then the climb into the Rif — roughly two hours with no stops.

A private transfer collects you from your Tangier hotel, the port, or Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), and drops you at the medina gate nearest your riad — usually Bab el-Ain, since cars cannot enter the blue lanes themselves. Your driver waits if your ferry or flight is late.

The CTM coach is the budget option at roughly 45–60 MAD, but it takes about three hours with the stop in Tetouan, runs only a handful of times a day, and arrives at the bus station below the old town, a steep 15-minute climb with luggage.

Is there a train from Tangier to Chefchaouen?

No. Morocco's rail network stops at Tangier in the north; there has never been a line into the Rif. Anyone who tells you they took the train to Chefchaouen took it to Tangier or Tetouan and continued by road.

That is why the road transfer market matters here: the choice is coach, shared taxi or private car, and the private car is the only one that starts at your hotel door and ends at your riad gate.

The drive through Tetouan and the Rif

The N2 runs east from Tangier past Tetouan, then turns inland and climbs. The surface is good throughout, but the final 40 minutes are continuously winding — sit in front if you are prone to travel sickness.

The viewpoint on the approach, where the whole blue medina appears against the Rif, is a two-minute stop and the photograph most people come for. Ask your driver.

Arriving from the ferry or from TNG

Ferries from Tarifa dock at Tangier Ville; the fast boat crossing takes about an hour. We track the sailing and meet you inside the terminal with a name board, at no extra cost for the wait.

From Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) the drive is slightly longer at roughly 2h15, because the airport sits west of the city. Flight tracking and 60 minutes of complimentary waiting are included.
