South of Casablanca the A1 motorway passes Azemmour's riverside medina on its way to El Jadida. South of El Jadida the R301 coast road runs through market gardens and salt pans to the Oualidia lagoon and on to Safi. South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. Good places to break the drive: Azemmour's walled medina, an oyster lunch at Oualidia and the Oualidia lagoon.
Arriving in Essaouira
Essaouira is a whitewashed, walled fishing port on the Atlantic — Portuguese-era ramparts, a working harbour full of blue boats and a steady trade wind that made it Morocco's windsurf capital. The medina is car-free. Drop-offs happen at Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech or the harbour car park, where licensed porters with barrows take bags the last few hundred metres.
