Plan on about 10h05 for the 825 km between Aghroud and Chefchaouen, following the N1 coast road, the A7 motorway, the A5 / A3 bypass, the A1 motorway and finally the N2 via Tetouan. Aghroud is a small stretch of surf coast between Aourir and Tamraght, known for its sand-bottom beach break and a few low-key guesthouses.

Who makes the Aghroud to Chefchaouen trip

Why this trip? Guests leave Aghroud mostly for airport runs or to spend a day in Agadir's souk and marina. As for Chefchaouen, visitors come for photographs in the blue lanes, hikes to the Spanish Mosque and Akchour's waterfalls, and a slower mountain pace. Few people make this 825 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.

The road from Aghroud to Chefchaouen

Aghroud sits on the coast just south of Tamraght, between the Aourir junction and Banana Point. Heading south, the N1 leaves the surf coast at Aourir's banana stalls and follows the shore through Anza into Agadir's port district. From Agadir the A7 motorway climbs through the argan-covered western High Atlas by Amskroud and Argana — tunnels, viaducts and long views — then descends across the Chichaoua plain to Marrakech. North of Marrakech the A7 crosses the Jbilet hills and the long, flat Rehamna and Chaouia plains past Benguerir and Settat to Mohammed V airport. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. North of Rabat the A1 passes Kenitra and the Loukkos plain by Larache, with the painted seaside town of Asilah just off the motorway before Tangier. From Tangier the road crosses to Tetouan's white medina, then climbs south into the Rif through green valleys to Chefchaouen. Good places to break the drive: the Argana viewpoints, the Settat service area and the Sidi Bou Othmane service area.

Arriving in Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is the blue-washed mountain town of the Rif, its medina of indigo lanes climbing the slope below two peaks, with a kasbah and a spring-fed river at the top. Cars cannot enter the medina. Drop-off is at Plaza Outa el-Hammam's lower gate, Bab el-Ain, or near the hotel district on the ring road; lanes are steep, so pack light or let the riad send help.

Should you split the journey?

At 10h05 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Rabat: Rabat is a calm capital for a night, with the Kasbah of the Udayas at sunset. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.

Before you go
