Getting to Chefchaouen: From Fes or From Marrakech (2026)

How to travel from Fes or Marrakech to Chefchaouen — distances, drive times, costs and whether the blue city is worth the detour.

Chefchaouen — the blue city — sits in the Rif mountains in northern Morocco. It's nowhere near the main tourist axis, which is exactly why it's worth the detour. Here's the realistic transfer picture from Fes and Marrakech.

From Fes to Chefchaouen

200 km · ~4 hours. The most popular approach, and the shortest. The road winds through olive groves and the Rif foothills — comfortable in a private Mercedes, brutal in a packed CTM bus. Fixed-price private transfer from $200 in a saloon — see Fes → Chefchaouen.

From Marrakech to Chefchaouen

580 km · ~8.5 hours. A real haul. Not a day trip — plan an overnight stop in Rabat or Fes, or fly Marrakech → Fes first and drive from there. Direct private transfer is possible but expensive; see Marrakech → Chefchaouen for the fixed price.

The recommended itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Marrakech → Fes (fly, 1 h) or drive (8 h, overnight in Meknes)
  2. Day 2 — Fes: medina, tanneries, Bou Inania madrasa
  3. Day 3 — Fes → Chefchaouen private transfer (~4 h), afternoon walk in the blue medina
  4. Day 4 — Chefchaouen: Spanish mosque hike, photography in the lanes
  5. Day 5 — Chefchaouen → Tangier (~2 h) or back to Fes for flight south

Is the blue city worth it?

Yes — for two nights. The colour is real, not painted for tourists. The pace is slower than Fes or Marrakech, the food is excellent (try Casa Aladdin), and the surrounding Rif walks are stunning. But it's small: more than two nights and most travellers run out of things to do.

Frequently asked

Is there a bus from Fes to Chefchaouen?

Yes — CTM runs 2–3 daily buses, ~4.5 hours, ~75 MAD. Reliable but slow and dusty. A private transfer is faster, door-to-door, and a better fit if you have luggage or want to stop at the Roman ruins of Volubilis on the way.

Can the driver wait in Chefchaouen for the return?

Yes — we offer multi-day chauffeur hire if you want the same driver for the full Fes → Chefchaouen → Tangier loop. Easier than booking each leg separately.
