The road from Erfoud to Agafay
West of Erfoud the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain, past the khettara irrigation wells and Tinejdad's oasis, to Tinghir. West of Tinghir the N10 passes Boumalne at the mouth of the Dades gorge, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. The final stretch: the Agafay stone desert begins about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, reached via the Amizmiz road. Good places to break the drive: the Dades gorge at Boumalne, the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery.
Arriving in Agafay
Agafay is a rocky desert plateau with the High Atlas as a backdrop, dotted with luxury tented camps and ecolodges within an hour of Marrakech. Camps are reached on unpaved tracks; the last few kilometres are slow, and some camps meet cars at a marked junction.
