Who makes the Agadir to Erfoud trip
Why this trip? Agadir works as a base, so trips out of it are usually day-trip-length or the start of a move to the surf villages, Marrakech or the deep south. As for Erfoud, people stop here for the fossil workshops, the date palms and hotels that are cheaper and calmer than Merzouga itself. Few people make this 655 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Agadir to Erfoud
East of Agadir the N10 crosses the Souss valley's orange groves to Taroudant's ramparts. East of Taroudant the N10 climbs out of the Souss valley to Taliouine's saffron fields and Tazenakht's carpet cooperatives, then crosses the Siroua plateau to Ouarzazate. East of Ouarzazate the N10 — the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' — passes the Skoura palmery, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the mouth of the Dades gorge at Boumalne before reaching Tinghir and the Todra gorge. East of Tinghir the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain through the oasis of Tinejdad and past lines of khettara irrigation wells to Erfoud. Good places to break the drive: the Dades gorge at Boumalne, the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery.
Arriving in Erfoud
Erfoud is a Ziz valley oasis town known for its black fossil marble workshops, its October date festival and as the last town before the Erg Chebbi dunes. A grid of wide streets with drive-up hotels; several kasbah hotels are on the Merzouga road just outside town.
Should you split the journey?
At 8 hours this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Ouarzazate: Ouarzazate is the classic overnight on the way to or from the desert. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
