North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Between Safi and El Jadida the R301 follows the coast past salt pans, market gardens and the Oualidia lagoon, famous for its oysters. Good places to break the drive: Souiria Kdima beach, an oyster lunch at Oualidia and the Oualidia lagoon.
Arriving in El Jadida
El Jadida is a seaside town 100 km south of Casablanca, built around a UNESCO-listed Portuguese fortress (Mazagan) with its famous underground cistern, plus a big beach resort just north of town. The Cité Portugaise is walkable and partly pedestrian; the resort hotels north of town have their own drive-up gates.
