Plan on about 8h05 for the 660 km between Erfoud and Sidi Kaouki, following the N10 / R702, the N10 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs', the N9, the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka and finally the R207 / N8. Erfoud is a Ziz valley oasis town known for its black fossil marble workshops, its October date festival and as the last town before the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Who makes the Erfoud to Sidi Kaouki trip
Why this trip? Erfoud is the gateway to Merzouga, so departures are often the return from the desert. As for Sidi Kaouki, surfers, kiters and horse-riders come for an empty beach and a much slower pace than Essaouira. Few people make this 660 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Erfoud to Sidi Kaouki
West of Erfoud the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain, past the khettara irrigation wells and Tinejdad's oasis, to Tinghir. West of Tinghir the N10 passes Boumalne at the mouth of the Dades gorge, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. The final stretch: sidi Kaouki lies 25 km south of Essaouira, reached by a side road off the N1 through argan country. Good places to break the drive: the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, the Skoura palmery and the Atlas film studios.
Arriving in Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki is a hamlet of guesthouses behind a vast, wild beach south of Essaouira, marked by the white marabout of the saint it is named after. There is essentially one road and a beachfront; your guesthouse can be pointed out on arrival.
Should you split the journey?
At 8h05 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Aït Benhaddou: a kasbah guesthouse at Aït Benhaddou lets you see the ksar after the day-trippers leave. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
