3 Days in Cairo: Pyramids, the Museum and Old Cairo
A realistic 3-day Cairo itinerary — Giza and Saqqara, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic and Coptic Cairo — with traffic-aware timings and fixed airport transfer prices.
Cairo rewards planning around traffic, not around sights. Three days is enough for the pyramids, the museum and the old city if you put each day in one part of town and move between them early or late.
Day 1 — Giza
Be at the plateau gate when it opens. Khufu, Khafre, the Sphinx and a walk out to the panorama point take a morning; entering a pyramid is a separate ticket and a hot, stooped climb — worth it once. Afternoon: the Grand Egyptian Museum, ten minutes away, which now holds the Tutankhamun collection.

Day 2 — Islamic Cairo
- Morning — the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali mosque, with the city laid out below.
- Midday — Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, facing each other across one square.
- Afternoon — Al-Muizz street on foot, then mint tea in Khan el-Khalili.
Day 3 — Coptic Cairo and a choice
Start in Coptic Cairo: the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra synagogue and the Coptic Museum sit within a few hundred metres. Then choose — Saqqara and the Step Pyramid (45 minutes out, far quieter than Giza), or the Nile: a felucca at sunset from Zamalek.
Getting around
Distances are short; journeys are not. Allow 60 to 90 minutes between Giza and central Cairo in the day, 30 at night. Ride-hailing works, but with no waiting and no fixed price. Best time to visit
October to April. Summer on the Giza plateau regularly passes 38°C with no shade whatsoever. Fridays are quieter on the roads and busier at the mosques.
