Erfoud to Essaouira, the comfortable way.

Plan on about 8 hours for the 655 km between Erfoud and Essaouira, following the N10 / R702, the N10 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs', the N9, the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka and finally the R207 / N8. Erfoud is a Ziz valley oasis town known for its black fossil marble workshops, its October date festival and as the last town before the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Who makes the Erfoud to Essaouira trip
Why this trip? Erfoud is the gateway to Merzouga, so departures are often the return from the desert. As for Essaouira, people come for the relaxed medina, the harbour grill stalls, the long windy beach and a few slow days after the intensity of Marrakech. Few people make this 655 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Erfoud to Essaouira
West of Erfoud the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain, past the khettara irrigation wells and Tinejdad's oasis, to Tinghir. West of Tinghir the N10 passes Boumalne at the mouth of the Dades gorge, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. Good places to break the drive: the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, the Skoura palmery and the Atlas film studios.
Arriving in Essaouira
Essaouira is a whitewashed, walled fishing port on the Atlantic — Portuguese-era ramparts, a working harbour full of blue boats and a steady trade wind that made it Morocco's windsurf capital. The medina is car-free. Drop-offs happen at Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech or the harbour car park, where licensed porters with barrows take bags the last few hundred metres.
Should you split the journey?
At 8 hours this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Aït Benhaddou: a kasbah guesthouse at Aït Benhaddou lets you see the ksar after the day-trippers leave. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
Before you go
Mild all year — rarely above 27 °C even in August — but the wind is strongest from May to September. From Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki's surf beach is 25 minutes south and the argan villages inland make an easy half day. The return leg, Essaouira to Erfoud, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
