Who makes the Safi to Erfoud trip
Why this trip? People often pass through Safi on a coastal road trip between Essaouira and El Jadida rather than staying long. As for Erfoud, people stop here for the fossil workshops, the date palms and hotels that are cheaper and calmer than Merzouga itself. Few people make this 600 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.
The road from Safi to Erfoud
South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. Leaving Essaouira the road passes through argan forest to Ounagha, then crosses the flat Chiadma plain to the Chichaoua junction and runs east into Marrakech with the High Atlas on the right. South-east of Marrakech the N9 climbs the High Atlas through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then descends into the stony south to the Aït Benhaddou turn-off. From Aït Benhaddou it is a short run across the plateau past the Atlas film studios into Ouarzazate. East of Ouarzazate the N10 — the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' — passes the Skoura palmery, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the mouth of the Dades gorge at Boumalne before reaching Tinghir and the Todra gorge. East of Tinghir the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain through the oasis of Tinejdad and past lines of khettara irrigation wells to Erfoud. Good places to break the drive: the argan and walnut terraces around Taddert, the Atlas film studios and the Dades gorge at Boumalne.
Arriving in Erfoud
Erfoud is a Ziz valley oasis town known for its black fossil marble workshops, its October date festival and as the last town before the Erg Chebbi dunes. A grid of wide streets with drive-up hotels; several kasbah hotels are on the Merzouga road just outside town.
Should you split the journey?
At 7h20 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Aït Benhaddou: a kasbah guesthouse at Aït Benhaddou lets you see the ksar after the day-trippers leave. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
