Marrakech airport taxi: fares, the rank and the alternatives
A taxi from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) to the city centre officially costs 100 MAD by day and 150 MAD at night — roughly €9–14 for the whole car. Drivers at the rank routinely open at 200–300 MAD with visitors, so agree the fare before you get in. The cream-coloured petit and grand taxis parked outside Terminal 1 arrivals are the default way into Marrakech, and on the posted rate they are genuinely good value. The problem is that the posted rate and the quoted rate are rarely the same number. How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport in 2026?
The official grand-taxi tariff from Marrakech Menara Airport to the city centre is 100 MAD during the day and 150 MAD at night, for the whole vehicle carrying up to four passengers with luggage. The rates are set by the Marrakech prefecture and are displayed on a board at the rank itself. In dollars that is roughly €9 by day and €14 at night.
Petit taxis (the smaller beige cars) are metered and technically cheaper, but they are limited to three passengers and are not always available at the airport rank. For most arrivals with suitcases the grand taxi is the practical choice.
Longer runs cost more and are not covered by the city-centre tariff. Palmeraie hotels typically run 150–200 MAD, Route de l'Ourika villas 200–300 MAD, and anywhere beyond the ring road is a negotiated price. Airport-to-Essaouira or airport-to-Agadir journeys are intercity work and should be booked rather than picked up at the rank.
How to avoid overpaying at the Menara taxi rank
Agree the number before you or your luggage get in the car. Once the boot is closed the negotiating position changes completely, and this is where most disputes start.
Say the fare rather than asking for it. "Cent dirhams, centre-ville" is understood everywhere and signals that you already know the tariff. If the driver refuses, walk to the next car — there is always another one.
Carry small notes. Change of 100 MAD is a common way to lose 50 MAD at the end of a ride, and it is very hard to argue at midnight outside a riad.
Do not accept an offer made inside the terminal building. Licensed airport taxis wait at the rank outside; anyone approaching you in arrivals is unlicensed, and the price will reflect it.
If you are arriving late, with children, with more than two large cases, or going to an address inside the medina walls, the rank is the wrong tool. Those are the four situations where a pre-booked transfer consistently works out better, and often costs about the same once the tourist premium is priced in.
Taxi or transfer — which is right for your arrival?
Take the taxi if you are travelling light, arriving in daylight, staying in Gueliz or Hivernage where the streets are wide and named, and you are comfortable holding a price in French or Arabic. On the posted fare it is the cheapest door-ish option in Marrakech.
Book the transfer if you are landing after dark, have a riad address down a derb, are travelling with children or board bags, or simply want to walk out of customs to someone holding your name. There is no wrong answer here. The mistake is arriving without knowing the official numbers — that is what turns a 100 MAD ride into a 300 MAD one.
