Who makes the Merzouga to Safi trip
Why this trip? People leave Merzouga the morning after the camp, often facing a long drive, so departures are usually early. As for Safi, visitors come for the potters' quarter and ceramics museum, surfers for the heavy right-hander in winter, and business travellers for the port. It is not an everyday transfer — 640 km is most of the width of Morocco — but it is a real one. The road from Merzouga to Safi
From Merzouga the road runs north past Rissani's market to Erfoud. West of Erfoud the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain, past the khettara irrigation wells and Tinejdad's oasis, to Tinghir. West of Tinghir the N10 passes Boumalne at the mouth of the Dades gorge, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Good places to break the drive: the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, the Skoura palmery and the Atlas film studios.
Arriving in Safi
Safi is an industrial port and the historic capital of Moroccan pottery, with a Portuguese sea fortress, a hilltop potters' quarter and big-wave reef breaks known to serious surfers. Hotels are spread between the port, the modern centre and the cliff road; addresses are straightforward by car.
Should you split the journey?
At 7h50 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Aït Benhaddou: a kasbah guesthouse at Aït Benhaddou lets you see the ksar after the day-trippers leave. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
