South of El Jadida the R301 coast road runs through market gardens and salt pans to the Oualidia lagoon and on to Safi. South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. South of Essaouira the N1 heads inland through Smimou and Tamanar's argan hills — the stretch where goats famously climb the trees — before cutting back towards the coast at Imsouane. Southbound from Imsouane the coast road passes Tamri's banana plantations and the Cap Ghir lighthouse before dropping into the surf villages. Heading south, the N1 leaves the surf coast at Aourir's banana stalls and follows the shore through Anza into Agadir's port district. East of Agadir the N10 crosses the Souss valley's orange groves to Taroudant's ramparts. Good places to break the drive: Souiria Kdima beach, an argan oil cooperative near Tamanar and goats in the argan trees around Smimou.

Taroudant is a walled market town in the Souss valley, often called 'little Marrakech' — ochre ramparts circle a medina with two good souks and almost no hustle. Riads inside the walls are mostly reachable by car or calèche; the ramparts road loops the whole town.
