Who makes the Chefchaouen to Agafay trip

Why this trip? Chefchaouen is usually a one- or two-night stop between Tangier and Fes, so departures often continue straight on. As for Agafay, it offers the desert-camp experience — sunset dinners, quad bikes, camel rides, starry skies — without the long drive to the Sahara. It is not an everyday transfer — 620 km is most of the width of Morocco — but it is a real one. It is booked by travellers who finish a desert tour and want to end their trip in Chefchaouen without doubling back through Marrakech, and by those going the other way who would rather spend one long day in a comfortable car than three on a shared tour bus.

The road from Chefchaouen to Agafay

From Chefchaouen the road winds north out of the Rif to Tetouan's white medina and across to Tangier. South of Tangier the A1 passes Asilah and Larache, then runs through Kenitra's farmland to Rabat. From Rabat the coastal motorway heads south and bypasses Casablanca on the east to reach Mohammed V without entering the city. South of Mohammed V the A7 crosses the Chaouia wheat plains past Berrechid, Settat and Benguerir, then drops over the Jbilet hills into Marrakech. The final stretch: the Agafay stone desert begins about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, reached via the Amizmiz road. Good places to break the drive: Asilah's painted medina, Larache's Lixus ruins and the Settat service area.

Arriving in Agafay

Agafay is a rocky desert plateau with the High Atlas as a backdrop, dotted with luxury tented camps and ecolodges within an hour of Marrakech. Camps are reached on unpaved tracks; the last few kilometres are slow, and some camps meet cars at a marked junction.

Should you split the journey?

At 7h35 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Rabat: Rabat is a calm capital for a night, with the Kasbah of the Udayas at sunset. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.
