The road from Aghroud to Essaouira
Aghroud sits on the coast just south of Tamraght, between the Aourir junction and Banana Point. Beyond Taghazout the N1 climbs above the cliffs past the Cap Ghir lighthouse and the banana plantations of Tamri, with the Atlantic below on the left. North of Imsouane the road turns inland through rolling argan hills around Tamanar and Smimou, where women's cooperatives sell argan oil at the roadside, then rejoins the coast at Essaouira. Good places to break the drive: the Cap Ghir lighthouse viewpoint, Tamri's banana plantations and an argan oil cooperative near Tamanar.
Arriving in Essaouira
Essaouira is a whitewashed, walled fishing port on the Atlantic — Portuguese-era ramparts, a working harbour full of blue boats and a steady trade wind that made it Morocco's windsurf capital. The medina is car-free. Drop-offs happen at Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech or the harbour car park, where licensed porters with barrows take bags the last few hundred metres.
Before you go
Once you are in Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki's surf beach is 25 minutes south and the argan villages inland make an easy half day.
