What does the trip from Agadir Airport to Rabat actually involve? 595 km, around 7h15 of driving by way of Marrakech and Nouaceur (skirting Casablanca), and a change of scene from the Souss coast to the Atlantic coast.

Who makes the Agadir Airport to Rabat trip

Almost everyone booking this leg has just landed at Agadir Airport. Many AGA arrivals are not staying in Agadir at all — they are heading north to the surf villages, south to Tiznit and Mirleft, or even up to Marrakech. Rabat is the destination because travellers come for government and embassy business, the museums and the Kasbah, or a quieter imperial-city stay. After a flight, 7h15 is a long time to spend in a car, so it pays to pick the roomier vehicle class and ask the driver to stop once or twice — the fare does not change.

The road from Agadir Airport to Rabat

Al Massira Airport lies inland at Temsia, about 25 km south-east of the Agadir seafront via the N10. From Agadir the A7 motorway climbs through the argan-covered western High Atlas by Amskroud and Argana — tunnels, viaducts and long views — then descends across the Chichaoua plain to Marrakech. North of Marrakech the A7 crosses the Jbilet hills and the long, flat Rehamna and Chaouia plains past Benguerir and Settat to Mohammed V airport. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. Good places to break the drive: the service area near Imi n'Tanout, the Argana viewpoints and the Settat service area.

Arriving in Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's capital — calm, green and orderly, with the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth, the Hassan Tower and a compact medina. Rabat's medina and Kasbah are pedestrian; hotels in Agdal and Hassan are easy drive-up addresses.

Should you split the journey?

At 7h15 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Marrakech: Marrakech is the natural halfway house for almost any north–south crossing. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.

Before you go

Mild coastal climate; spring is lovely, winter can be wet. From Rabat, Salé's old medina is just across the Bou Regreg, and Meknes and Volubilis are two hours east. The return leg, Rabat to Agadir Airport, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
