Plan on about 4h45 for the 390 km between Taroudant and El Jadida, following the N10 through the Souss, the N1 coast road, the N1 cliff road, the N1 through argan country, the N1 / coast road and finally the R301 coastal road. Taroudant is a walled market town in the Souss valley, often called 'little Marrakech' — ochre ramparts circle a medina with two good souks and almost no hustle.

Who makes the Taroudant to El Jadida trip

Why this trip? Taroudant is a quiet side trip, so departures are usually back to Agadir or onward over the Anti-Atlas towards Ouarzazate. As for El Jadida, people come for the Portuguese cistern, the Mazagan beach resort and golf, and summer beach holidays popular with Moroccan families.

The road from Taroudant to El Jadida

West of Taroudant the N10 runs through the flat Souss valley, lined with orange and banana orchards, to Agadir. North of Agadir the N1 runs along the ocean through Anza and Aourir — the 'Banana Village' roadside stalls — before the first surf villages appear. Beyond Taghazout the N1 climbs above the cliffs past the Cap Ghir lighthouse and the banana plantations of Tamri, with the Atlantic below on the left. North of Imsouane the road turns inland through rolling argan hills around Tamanar and Smimou, where women's cooperatives sell argan oil at the roadside, then rejoins the coast at Essaouira. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Between Safi and El Jadida the R301 follows the coast past salt pans, market gardens and the Oualidia lagoon, famous for its oysters. Good places to break the drive: Tamri's banana plantations, an argan oil cooperative near Tamanar and goats in the argan trees around Smimou.

Arriving in El Jadida

El Jadida is a seaside town 100 km south of Casablanca, built around a UNESCO-listed Portuguese fortress (Mazagan) with its famous underground cistern, plus a big beach resort just north of town. The Cité Portugaise is walkable and partly pedestrian; the resort hotels north of town have their own drive-up gates.

Before you go

Busy with domestic tourists in July and August; spring and autumn are calmer. From El Jadida, Azemmour's old walled town on the Oum Er-Rbia river is 20 minutes north. The return leg, El Jadida to Taroudant, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
