Plan on about 7h10 for the 590 km between Taghazout and Rabat, following the N1 coast road, the A7 motorway and finally the A5 / A3 bypass. Taghazout is a former fishing village 20 km north of Agadir that has become Morocco's surf capital, with point breaks like Anchor Point and Killer Point and a newer resort development, Taghazout Bay, just south of it.

Who makes the Taghazout to Rabat trip

Why this trip? Departures from Taghazout are typically the end of a surf week, or a move to quieter breaks once the village fills up. As for Rabat, travellers come for government and embassy business, the museums and the Kasbah, or a quieter imperial-city stay. Few people make this 590 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.

The road from Taghazout to Rabat

Heading south, the N1 leaves the surf coast at Aourir's banana stalls and follows the shore through Anza into Agadir's port district. From Agadir the A7 motorway climbs through the argan-covered western High Atlas by Amskroud and Argana — tunnels, viaducts and long views — then descends across the Chichaoua plain to Marrakech. North of Marrakech the A7 crosses the Jbilet hills and the long, flat Rehamna and Chaouia plains past Benguerir and Settat to Mohammed V airport. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. Good places to break the drive: the service area near Imi n'Tanout, the Argana viewpoints and the Settat service area.

Arriving in Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's capital — calm, green and orderly, with the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth, the Hassan Tower and a compact medina. Rabat's medina and Kasbah are pedestrian; hotels in Agdal and Hassan are easy drive-up addresses.

Should you split the journey?

At 7h10 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Marrakech: Marrakech is the natural halfway house for almost any north–south crossing. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.

Before you go

A final practical note on Rabat: mild coastal climate; spring is lovely, winter can be wet. And when you are ready to move on, Salé's old medina is just across the Bou Regreg, and Meknes and Volubilis are two hours east. The return leg, Rabat to Taghazout, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
