The road from Sidi Kaouki to Agafay
Sidi Kaouki lies 25 km south of Essaouira, reached by a side road off the N1 through argan country. Leaving Essaouira the road passes through argan forest to Ounagha, then crosses the flat Chiadma plain to the Chichaoua junction and runs east into Marrakech with the High Atlas on the right. The final stretch: the Agafay stone desert begins about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, reached via the Amizmiz road. Good places to break the drive: the argan cooperatives at Ounagha and a café stop at Chichaoua.

Agafay is a rocky desert plateau with the High Atlas as a backdrop, dotted with luxury tented camps and ecolodges within an hour of Marrakech. Camps are reached on unpaved tracks; the last few kilometres are slow, and some camps meet cars at a marked junction.
