Plan on about 4 hours for the 330 km between Safi and Ouarzazate, following the N1 / coast road, the R207 / N8, the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka and finally the N9. Safi is an industrial port and the historic capital of Moroccan pottery, with a Portuguese sea fortress, a hilltop potters' quarter and big-wave reef breaks known to serious surfers.

The road from Safi to Ouarzazate
South of Safi the road hugs the coast past Souiria Kdima's fishing beach, then crosses the Had Draa farmland towards Essaouira. Leaving Essaouira the road passes through argan forest to Ounagha, then crosses the flat Chiadma plain to the Chichaoua junction and runs east into Marrakech with the High Atlas on the right. South-east of Marrakech the N9 climbs the High Atlas through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then descends into the stony south to the Aït Benhaddou turn-off. From Aït Benhaddou it is a short run across the plateau past the Atlas film studios into Ouarzazate. Good places to break the drive: the argan cooperatives at Ounagha, a café stop at Chichaoua and the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
Arriving in Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is the gateway town to the Moroccan south — home to the Taourirt kasbah, the Atlas film studios and the Noor solar plant, at 1,100 m on a stony plateau. Wide boulevards and drive-up hotels; kasbah guesthouses outside town can be down short dirt tracks.
