Plan on about 4 hours for the 330 km between Ouarzazate and Safi, following the N9, the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka, the R207 / N8 and finally the N1 / coast road. Ouarzazate is the gateway town to the Moroccan south — home to the Taourirt kasbah, the Atlas film studios and the Noor solar plant, at 1,100 m on a stony plateau.

Why this trip? Ouarzazate is a staging post, so departures lead to the Dades and Todra gorges, the Draa valley or back over the Atlas. As for Safi, visitors come for the potters' quarter and ceramics museum, surfers for the heavy right-hander in winter, and business travellers for the port.
The road from Ouarzazate to Safi
From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Good places to break the drive: the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the argan and walnut terraces around Taddert and the argan cooperatives at Ounagha.
Arriving in Safi
Safi is an industrial port and the historic capital of Moroccan pottery, with a Portuguese sea fortress, a hilltop potters' quarter and big-wave reef breaks known to serious surfers. Hotels are spread between the port, the modern centre and the cliff road; addresses are straightforward by car.
Before you go
