Why this trip? People leave Agafay the morning after a camp night, usually back to Marrakech or on to the coast. As for Erfoud, people stop here for the fossil workshops, the date palms and hotels that are cheaper and calmer than Merzouga itself. It is not an everyday transfer — 475 km is most of the width of Morocco — but it is a real one. It is booked by travellers who finish a desert tour and want to end their trip in Erfoud without doubling back through Marrakech, and by those going the other way who would rather spend one long day in a comfortable car than three on a shared tour bus.
The road from Agafay to Erfoud
The Agafay stone desert begins about 35 km south-west of Marrakech, reached via the Amizmiz road. South-east of Marrakech the N9 climbs the High Atlas through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then descends into the stony south to the Aït Benhaddou turn-off. From Aït Benhaddou it is a short run across the plateau past the Atlas film studios into Ouarzazate. East of Ouarzazate the N10 — the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' — passes the Skoura palmery, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the mouth of the Dades gorge at Boumalne before reaching Tinghir and the Todra gorge. East of Tinghir the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain through the oasis of Tinejdad and past lines of khettara irrigation wells to Erfoud. Good places to break the drive: the Atlas film studios, the Dades gorge at Boumalne and the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna.
Arriving in Erfoud
Erfoud is a Ziz valley oasis town known for its black fossil marble workshops, its October date festival and as the last town before the Erg Chebbi dunes. A grid of wide streets with drive-up hotels; several kasbah hotels are on the Merzouga road just outside town.
