The Agadir–El Jadida transfer covers 415 km in about 5h05. It links the Souss coast with the Atlantic coast south of Casablanca by way of Taghazout, Imsouane and Essaouira, and it is priced per vehicle from €277, so a family or group pays the same as one traveller.

Who makes the Agadir to El Jadida trip

Why this trip? Agadir works as a base, so trips out of it are usually day-trip-length or the start of a move to the surf villages, Marrakech or the deep south. As for El Jadida, people come for the Portuguese cistern, the Mazagan beach resort and golf, and summer beach holidays popular with Moroccan families.

The road from Agadir to El Jadida

North of Agadir the N1 runs along the ocean through Anza and Aourir — the 'Banana Village' roadside stalls — before the first surf villages appear. Beyond Taghazout the N1 climbs above the cliffs past the Cap Ghir lighthouse and the banana plantations of Tamri, with the Atlantic below on the left. North of Imsouane the road turns inland through rolling argan hills around Tamanar and Smimou, where women's cooperatives sell argan oil at the roadside, then rejoins the coast at Essaouira. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Between Safi and El Jadida the R301 follows the coast past salt pans, market gardens and the Oualidia lagoon, famous for its oysters. Good places to break the drive: Tamri's banana plantations, an argan oil cooperative near Tamanar and goats in the argan trees around Smimou.

Arriving in El Jadida

El Jadida is a seaside town 100 km south of Casablanca, built around a UNESCO-listed Portuguese fortress (Mazagan) with its famous underground cistern, plus a big beach resort just north of town. The Cité Portugaise is walkable and partly pedestrian; the resort hotels north of town have their own drive-up gates.

Before you go

Once you are in El Jadida, Azemmour's old walled town on the Oum Er-Rbia river is 20 minutes north. Busy with domestic tourists in July and August; spring and autumn are calmer. The return leg, El Jadida to Agadir, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
