What does the trip from Sidi Kaouki to Rabat actually involve? 505 km, around 6h10 of driving by way of Safi, El Jadida and Nouaceur (skirting Casablanca), and a change of scene from the Atlantic coast to the Atlantic coast.

Who makes the Sidi Kaouki to Rabat trip

Why this trip? People leave Sidi Kaouki to catch a flight or to swap the solitude for a few days in a bigger town. As for Rabat, travellers come for government and embassy business, the museums and the Kasbah, or a quieter imperial-city stay. Few people make this 505 km crossing in one go, and we would rather say so plainly: it is booked by travellers who have a fixed flight or hotel at the far end and would rather cover the distance in one private day than stitch together buses and grand taxis.

The road from Sidi Kaouki to Rabat

Sidi Kaouki lies 25 km south of Essaouira, reached by a side road off the N1 through argan country. North of Essaouira the road crosses the Had Draa farmland and then follows the coast past Souiria Kdima's beach into Safi. Between Safi and El Jadida the R301 follows the coast past salt pans, market gardens and the Oualidia lagoon, famous for its oysters. From El Jadida the A1 runs north past Azemmour, then a bypass through Had Soualem avoids Casablanca and leads straight to the airport at Nouaceur. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. Good places to break the drive: Souiria Kdima beach, an oyster lunch at Oualidia and the Oualidia lagoon.

Arriving in Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's capital — calm, green and orderly, with the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth, the Hassan Tower and a compact medina. Rabat's medina and Kasbah are pedestrian; hotels in Agdal and Hassan are easy drive-up addresses.

Should you split the journey?

At 6h10 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is El Jadida: El Jadida's Portuguese quarter is worth an evening. Book two one-way legs and the driver meets you again the next morning.

Before you go

A final practical note on Rabat: mild coastal climate; spring is lovely, winter can be wet. And when you are ready to move on, Salé's old medina is just across the Bou Regreg, and Meknes and Volubilis are two hours east. The return leg, Rabat to Sidi Kaouki, has its own page and the same per-vehicle pricing.
