Why this trip? People leave Merzouga the morning after the camp, often facing a long drive, so departures are usually early. As for Sidi Kaouki, surfers, kiters and horse-riders come for an empty beach and a much slower pace than Essaouira. The road from Merzouga to Sidi Kaouki
From Merzouga the road runs north past Rissani's market to Erfoud. West of Erfoud the road crosses the pre-Saharan plain, past the khettara irrigation wells and Tinejdad's oasis, to Tinghir. West of Tinghir the N10 passes Boumalne at the mouth of the Dades gorge, the rose town of Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palmery into Ouarzazate. From Ouarzazate the road passes the Atlas film studios and crosses the plateau to Aït Benhaddou. From Aït Benhaddou the road joins the N9 and climbs north over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, then twists down through Atlas villages into Marrakech. West of Marrakech the N8 crosses the dry Haouz plain to Chichaoua, then the R207 heads through the Chiadma farmland and the argan forest down to the ocean at Essaouira. The final stretch: sidi Kaouki lies 25 km south of Essaouira, reached by a side road off the N1 through argan country. Good places to break the drive: the rose valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, the Skoura palmery and the Atlas film studios.
Arriving in Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki is a hamlet of guesthouses behind a vast, wild beach south of Essaouira, marked by the white marabout of the saint it is named after. There is essentially one road and a beachfront; your guesthouse can be pointed out on arrival.
Should you split the journey?
At 8h20 this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it. The natural halfway point is Aït Benhaddou: a kasbah guesthouse at Aït Benhaddou lets you see the ksar after the day-trippers leave.
