North of Marrakech the A7 crosses the Jbilet hills and the long, flat Rehamna and Chaouia plains past Benguerir and Settat to Mohammed V airport. From Mohammed V a motorway bypass skirts Casablanca's eastern edge and joins the coastal A3 to Rabat, avoiding the city traffic. North of Rabat the A1 passes Kenitra and the Loukkos plain by Larache, with the painted seaside town of Asilah just off the motorway before Tangier. Good places to break the drive: the Argana viewpoints, the Settat service area and the Sidi Bou Othmane service area.
Arriving in Tangier
Tangier faces Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar — a port city with a lively medina and kasbah, a long literary history and a newly rebuilt seafront. Kasbah and medina addresses are pedestrian; drivers stop at Place de la Kasbah or the Grand Socco.
Should you split the journey?
At 11 hours this is a full day in the car. We run it in one day for anyone who wants that — with breaks every two hours or so — but many travellers prefer to split it.
