5 Days in Hurghada: Reefs, Desert and a Day in Luxor
How to spend five days on Egypt's Red Sea coast — Giftun island, house reefs, a desert evening, El Gouna and a day trip to Luxor — with transfer times and prices.
Five days on the Red Sea is a beach holiday with two good excursions hidden inside it. Here is how to spend them without booking the same boat trip three times.
Day 1 — Arrival and the house reef
Hurghada airport sits 10 minutes from the city and 35 from El Gouna or Makadi Bay. Fixed prices for every resort are on the Hurghada airport transfer page. Spend the afternoon snorkelling off your own jetty — the reef is usually right there.
Day 2 — Giftun island
The classic boat day: two or three reef stops, lunch on board, white sand at Mahmya or Orange Bay. Book a smaller boat if you can; the big ones anchor in the same three spots.
Day 3 — Desert and the old town
Morning off, then an afternoon into the Eastern Desert: quad tracks, Bedouin tea and a sky with no light pollution. Back for dinner in Sakkala, where the fish is priced by the kilo.
Day 4 — Luxor, the long day
Leave at 05:00 and you are at Karnak before the heat. The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and the Colossi fill the rest, then 4 hours back. It is a big day and the only way to see ancient Egypt from a Red Sea base — see the 7-day Egypt itinerary if you would rather give Luxor its own nights.
Day 5 — El Gouna or diving
Either a certified dive on a proper wreck or wall, or a slow day in El Gouna: lagoons, marina, a boat taxi between the islands.

Practical notes
