Arriving at Luxor International Airport
Luxor International (LXR) is a small, calm airport 6 km east of the Nile — the closest arrival point to the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and the Nile cruise moorings.
LXR handles a handful of flights a day, so arrivals are quick: one hall, one belt, one exit. That also means the taxi supply outside is thin and matched to flight times rather than to demand. Your driver waits in the hall with a name sign and knows which cruise-boat mooring or west-bank guesthouse you actually need.
How to get from LXR to Aswan
Private transfer — the default here
You book before you fly, the price is fixed to the car and not the person, and the driver is inside arrivals with your name on a sign. On this route that matters more than usual: it is a long-distance run across open desert where the alternative is agreeing a fare with a stranger while jet lagged. Airport taxi
Luxor taxis quote a fixed tourist price for the airport run and will usually attach a sales pitch for a full-day west bank tour. Fares are cheap by European standards but the vehicles are old, air conditioning is unreliable in summer, and boot space is limited.
Bus, train or shuttle
There is no airport bus. Egypt's main railway line runs through Luxor station in the city centre, so trains are useful for onward travel to Aswan or Cairo — but not for getting out of the airport.
Hotel shuttle
Many hotels in Aswan will arrange a pickup, usually at a higher price than an independent transfer and often on a shared basis — which means waiting in arrivals until every passenger on the list has cleared customs. Worth it only if your hotel includes it in the rate.
What each option really costs
| Option | Typical cost | Time | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (Bacharide) | from $115 per car | 3 h | Needs booking in advance |
| Airport taxi rank | Negotiated, usually higher after luggage and night surcharges | 3 h | No fixed price, no flight tracking |
| Hotel shuttle | Per person, often above the private car price for two or more | 3 h plus the wait for other guests | Shared departures, fixed slots |
| Bus / train | Cheapest where it exists | Not direct from the terminal | Luggage, transfers and schedules built for locals |
The drive itself
From Luxor the route follows the Nile valley south through Edfu and Kom Ombo; from the Red Sea it crosses the Eastern Desert. Both are long but well-surfaced runs with checkpoints.
Because this is a 3 h journey, drivers plan a comfort stop at a service area roughly halfway, and vehicles are air-conditioned and checked before long desert legs. Bring water and snacks anyway — the gaps between stops are real, and phone coverage is patchy on some stretches.
Aswan: what you are arriving into
Aswan is Egypt's southern city — Nubian villages, granite islands, the High Dam and the temple of Philae, all on the calmest stretch of the Nile. It is the traditional start or end of a Nile cruise.
Areas worth knowing
- The Corniche and the souk
- Elephantine Island and the Nubian villages
- The west bank — Tombs of the Nobles, St Simeon's monastery
- The High Dam and Philae, south of the city

What people do here
- Philae Temple by motorboat
- Felucca sailing around Elephantine and Kitchener's Island
- The Nubian Museum
- Day trips or convoys south to Abu Simbel
When to travel
November to February. Aswan is Egypt's hottest major city in summer, routinely above 43 °C.
Two Egypt-wide notes worth planning around. Ramadan shifts everything: restaurants open late, roads are chaotic just before sunset and calm immediately after. And between June and September, midday heat inland regularly passes 40 °C — schedule long drives and sightseeing for the early morning.
Local tips for Aswan
- The souk is one of Egypt's best — and one of its most persistent.
- Abu Simbel is a three-hour drive each way; leaving before dawn is standard.
- Nubian island guesthouses are boat-access only; your driver drops you at the landing.
Night and early-morning arrivals
Most LXR arrivals are daytime. When a delayed flight lands late, the rank empties fast — which is exactly when a pre-booked, flight-tracked pickup pays for itself, especially if you are joining a cruise boat that has already boarded.
