A private transfer from Hurghada International Airport (HRG) to Luxor costs from $115 for the whole car, covers about 290 km and takes roughly 4 h door to door. There is no train and no airport bus on this route, so the real choice is between a pre-booked car and negotiating with the rank outside arrivals.

Arriving at Hurghada International Airport

Hurghada International (HRG) is Egypt's busiest Red Sea gateway, sitting 5 km inland from the resort strip and within a four-hour drive of everything between El Gouna and Marsa Alam.

HRG runs two passenger terminals; almost every charter and low-cost flight from Europe lands at Terminal 2. After passport control and the baggage belts you walk into a single arrivals hall that funnels everyone through one exit. Your Bacharide driver waits inside that hall, past the customs doors, holding a name sign — so you never have to work out which of the men calling to you is actually yours.

How to get from HRG to Luxor

Private transfer — the default here

You book before you fly, the price is fixed to the car and not the person, and the driver is inside arrivals with your name on a sign. On this route that matters more than usual: it is a long-distance run across open desert where the alternative is agreeing a fare with a stranger while jet lagged. Airport taxi

The taxi rank outside works on negotiation, not meters. Rates quoted to arriving tourists are routinely two to three times the local price, drivers rarely speak much English beyond the haggle, and a second round of price-setting often starts once your bags are already in the boot.

Bus, train or shuttle

There is no train and no airport bus at HRG. Go Bus and Blue Bus serve Hurghada's city bus station, not the terminal, so any bus journey starts with a taxi ride anyway — and long-distance departures are timed for locals, not for flight arrivals.

Hotel shuttle

Many hotels in Luxor will arrange a pickup, usually at a higher price than an independent transfer and often on a shared basis — which means waiting in arrivals until every passenger on the list has cleared customs. Worth it only if your hotel includes it in the rate.

The drive itself

From the Red Sea, the road crosses 200–300 km of Eastern Desert on a good modern highway before dropping into the green Nile valley — the change of landscape is abrupt and memorable.

Because this is a 4 h journey, drivers plan a comfort stop at a service area roughly halfway, and vehicles are air-conditioned and checked before long desert legs. Bring water and snacks anyway — the gaps between stops are real, and phone coverage is patchy on some stretches.

Luxor: what you are arriving into

Luxor is the open-air museum of Egypt: Karnak and Luxor temples on the east bank, the Valley of the Kings and the great mortuary temples on the west, the Nile between them. Nowhere else concentrates so much of the ancient world in a single town.

Areas worth knowing

  • East bank — Corniche hotels, Luxor Temple, Karnak, the souk
  • West bank — Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu, quieter guesthouses
  • New Tiba City — newer residential district north-east of the centre

What people do here

  • Karnak and Luxor temples, ideally at opening or at night
  • The Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the west bank
  • Sunrise hot-air balloon flights over the Theban necropolis
  • Feluccas and Nile cruise embarkation towards Aswan

When to travel

November to March for sightseeing weather. Summer regularly exceeds 42 °C, which makes tombs genuinely hard work.

Two Egypt-wide notes worth planning around. Ramadan shifts everything: restaurants open late, roads are chaotic just before sunset and calm immediately after. And between June and September, midday heat inland regularly passes 40 °C — schedule long drives and sightseeing for the early morning.

Local tips for Luxor

  • Buy tickets for the west bank sites at the central ticket office or online before you go.
  • Balloon flights leave before dawn — arrange the pickup with your hotel the night before.
  • The east–west bridge is south of town; the ferry is faster if you're on foot.

Night and early-morning arrivals

A large share of HRG traffic lands between 22:00 and 04:00. Nothing scheduled runs at those hours, hotel desks are unstaffed and the taxi rank thins out fast. A pre-booked transfer tracks your flight number, so a three-hour delay simply moves the pickup — at no extra cost and with no midnight negotiation.
